Dilemma (Theoretical versus Practical)

It is said that men learn from their failures while the wiser ones learn from others failures.

Considering that all are not born wiser, is it all right for the children to learn the hard way? Would they really understand the extent of fire burns till they really get burnt?

How can we decide what is to be taught theoretical and where to go practical and which lessons should not be taught???

A friend of ours (guess who?) told me how she actually let her kid touch a still warm iron so she wouldn't hurt herself by touching it ever in future. The kid learnt the lesson and how!

Its much easier for kids to learn these lessons. We are so stupid in our so-called knowledge that life has to the same lesson again and again before we actually learn from it!

Practicals are tough!

i think the first step should be to teach the kids everything theoretically. when the kids grow up, they would get chances to practice whatever they had learnt theoretically.

also, i think that we need to teach the kids to be sensible. when the kid acquires common sense and starts using its brain, we shall assume that the kid will learn by itself.

I think you should teach children everything in theory and when they fail be there to lift them up and let them learn from the failure rather than bailing them out.My husband is a very practical person and he feels that children have to learn the hard way , he says if everything is made to look too easy then they will have a hard time dealing with difficult issues.I think its good to be inbetween.Good thought chitra.

what to teach and what not to, is something that still is a very grey area for all those in the field of education.

however, will u not agree with me if i say that 'why teach' is fundamentally the most important question that we need to introspect and find an answer for.

once the 'why' is clear in our minds, i suppose the 'whats' and more importantly, the 'hows' will be answered automatically...

I wish I knew :)

I guess we can only teach them.. Being parents, we might want to help the through.. but I believe that they should know the basics and how did we get there before they are pampered all the way.

So, we can guide them, but let them learn as they grow.. with us having a watchful eye on them ;P

I guess you teach them first which in my case fails most of time. Most children learn the hard way. It is never easy for the parents. Parents should be there to guide them but the understanding needs to come from the kids. Till then keep your fingers crossed :-)

At the theoretical level, one acknowledges that all individuals cannot be profitably arrayed on a single intellectual dimension. At the practical level, one acknowledges that any uniform educational approach is likely to serve only a minority of children.

We can only take the horse to the lake....cant make it drink the water. Similarly, we can give good eg to our kids, upto them to take it or leave it. Else they;ve to learn it the hard way.

I am reading this book called "How to raise a brighter child." In that book, the author says we should let the kid find out most of the stuff by himself. We only need to protect him when he is in grave danger (scratching, small burning etc. don't count as grave danger) I don't know how much of it we will implement but I think we are going to try.

I dont have a child, so not the best person to talk to about this. But I will talk based on what I see around me. Parents tend to run to protect their child when they see them stumble or when they cry adamantly, some parents do the opposite in most cases, I see that they let the child go touch something hot or fall and stumble a little, they say they will learn never to go touch something hot with their bare hands....so see confusing eh?

I think its always good to warn them, so that they will be prepared even if they get burnt. So when they get burnt they will understand that somethings are better learnt theoretical. I am not the right person to talk on this, but just what I felt.
